What Patients Ask After Getting Braces
Starting braces is exciting — you're officially on your way to a healthier, straighter smile! 😄 But we also know the first few days can feel a little overwhelming. At Nexus Orthodontics here in New Hyde Park, we get tons of questions from patients right after their braces go on.
Whether you're a high school student heading back to class, a busy parent helping your child adjust, or an adult getting braces for the first time — you're not alone in wondering:
“Can I still eat this?”
“Why do my teeth feel weird?”
“Do I really have to floss every day?”
Let’s go over a few of the most common questions we hear — and what you should know.
🍬 Can I still eat candy?
We’re not trying to ruin your sweet tooth, but hard and sticky candies are off-limits while you’re in braces. Think caramel, taffy, gummy bears, Jolly Ranchers — even lollipops. These can break your brackets or bend wires, which means more appointments and longer treatment time. 🙅
Better choices:
Soft chocolate (without nuts), smoothies, milkshakes, or yogurt. You can still enjoy treats — just choose the braces-friendly ones.
🧊 What about chewing ice?
Short answer? Please don’t.
Chewing ice can easily damage your braces, even if you’re not biting that hard. The pressure and cold temperature can loosen brackets or cause discomfort. Try crushed ice or a cold drink instead!
😕 Why do my teeth feel a little loose?
Totally normal — and actually a good sign!
Braces work by slowly moving your teeth into better positions, and that movement can make them feel a little loose at first. They’ll firm up again once they’re settled into their new spot.
🪥 Do I really have to floss?
Yes — no shortcuts here!
Brushing only gets about 60% of the surface area of your teeth. The areas between your teeth and under your wires are perfect hiding spots for plaque and food particles.
Skipping flossing can lead to:
Gum inflammation
White spots (decalcification)
Cavities that form during treatment 😬
We recommend using floss threaders, orthodontic floss, or a Waterpik to make it easier.
🛠️ What if something breaks?
It happens. If a wire pokes out or a bracket pops off, just give us a call. We’ll help you fix it quickly. In the meantime, use the orthodontic wax from your starter kit to cover sharp edges and avoid irritation.
💡 Pro tip: Bring your wax with you if you're out for the day — just in case!
