Temporary Anchorage Devices

Technology and teeth may seem kind of scary, but at Nexus, we are mindfully using the latest tech in order to help give you the best care. We utilize temporary anchorage devices, or TADs, in order to move your teeth quicker, and with more comfort. TADs are small, titanium anchors that are used in certain, but not all, cases. Sometimes, they are used in addition to braces, or as an alternative to other forms of treatment that could cause discomfort, like headgear.

If your orthodontic care team at Nexus recommends that TADs be utilized, we will work with you to ensure that you are comfortable with the plan. To implement TADs, a strong anesthetic will be  needed to numb the gum tissue and the jaw surrounding the site where the TAD will be. You won’t be put to sleep, but that area of your mouth will be numbed.

Our doctor will carefully place the TAD through the gum tissue and into the jawbone, once the area is numb. This is to minimize the pain or discomfort for you. In a few short moments, the process is over with. It’s a quick and simple procedure that might cause you some discomfort for the first day, as you transition into having it; however, most patients report that they don’t notice it anymore after the first day. Once your treatment is over, or your team decides a TAD is no longer necessary to support your orthodontic care, the removal is quick and easy - an even shorter and painless procedure that will only take a few minutes.
