What Are O-Ties?

If you have braces, you may hear your orthodontist mention O-ties during your appointment.

O-ties, also called orthodontic ties, ligatures, or elastic ties, are the small rubber bands that go around each bracket. Their job is to hold the orthodontic wire, called the archwire, securely inside the bracket on each tooth.

They may be small, but they are an important part of how traditional braces work.

What Do O-Ties Do?

O-ties help keep the archwire in place.

The archwire is the part of braces that helps guide tooth movement over time. O-ties do not move the teeth on their own. Instead, they secure the wire so the braces system can work properly.

Think of them as the small bands that help keep everything connected.

Why Do O-Ties Come in Different Colors?

One of the fun parts of braces is choosing O-tie colors.

O-ties come in many colors, so patients can customize their braces at each visit. Some patients choose their favorite colors, while others match their bands to holidays, seasons, school colors, or sports teams.

For kids and teens, this can make braces feel more fun and personal. Adults can also choose colors, or keep things simple with more neutral shades.

How Often Are O-Ties Changed?

O-ties are usually changed at each adjustment appointment.

Because they are made of elastic material, they can lose strength over time. Replacing them regularly helps keep the archwire secure and allows the orthodontist to continue guiding treatment progress.

Are O-Ties Used With Every Type of Braces?

Not every orthodontic treatment uses O-ties. Many traditional braces use elastic ties, but some bracket systems use clips or other designs to hold the wire in place.

If you are not sure what type of braces you or your child has, your orthodontist can explain how your brackets, wires, and elastic ties work together.
