Do You Get Braces at Your First Appointment?
Usually no — the first visit is an exam, records, and a plan. What actually happens, and when braces really go on. New Hyde Park orthodontist.
It’s one of the most common questions we get before a first visit, and it’s usually asked with a mix of hope and dread depending on who’s asking.
The short answer: usually not. The first appointment is a consultation, not a procedure. You’ll almost certainly walk out with the same teeth you walked in with.
Here’s why that is, and what actually happens instead.
Why Braces Don’t Go On Day One
Placing braces without a plan would be like starting a renovation without drawings. Before anything gets bonded to a tooth, we need to know exactly where every tooth is going and in what order.
That requires an examination, records, and a treatment plan — and those things come out of the first visit rather than existing before it.
There’s a second reason, and it matters just as much: you haven’t agreed to anything yet. A first appointment is also where you find out what treatment would involve, how long it would take, and what it would cost. Nobody should be committing to 18–24 months of treatment in the same hour they first hear the options.
What Actually Happens
From our getting started page, here’s the real sequence:
Before you arrive, you can fill out your patient forms online. Then check-in is simply checking in.
You see the office. You’ll come back and see our facilities in person — worth more than it sounds, especially for a nervous kid.
A full orthodontic examination. This is the core of the visit. We assess how the teeth and jaws are developing and what, if anything, needs correcting.
A discussion of options. We talk through the treatment approaches that would work best for your needs and your lifestyle — braces, clear aligners, or in a child’s case, whether to treat now or monitor.
Your questions. Time is deliberately set aside for this. Orthodontics is a big decision, and no question is too general or too specific — this is your time.
A second appointment, if needed. At the end of the consultation we’ll schedule a follow-up to go over treatment plan options, time frames, and any financial arrangements before treatment begins.
For the fuller walkthrough — the records we take, how long the visit runs, and how to prepare — see our guide to what to expect at your first orthodontic appointment.
So When Do Braces Actually Go On?
After the plan is settled and you’ve agreed to it. For most patients that’s a separate, longer appointment scheduled after the consultation.
The bonding appointment itself is straightforward — nothing sharp, nothing that requires numbing. Afterward, expect some tenderness for a few days, which our guide on what’s normal after braces walks through.
If You’re Bringing a Child
Parents often ask whether a first visit at age 7 means braces at age 7. Almost never. Most early evaluations end with monitoring — we take records and watch how growth unfolds. Early treatment exists for the cases where acting sooner genuinely changes the options, and those are the minority.
FAQs
Do you get braces on your first orthodontist appointment? Usually not. The first visit is a consultation — an examination, discussion of treatment options, and time for your questions. Braces are placed at a later appointment once a treatment plan is agreed on.
What happens at a first orthodontic appointment? You check in, see the office, and receive a full orthodontic examination along with a discussion of the treatment options that fit your needs and lifestyle. It’s also set aside as time for you to ask questions.
How long after the consultation do braces go on? It varies by practice and case. At the end of the consultation, if needed, a second appointment is scheduled to go over treatment plan options, time frames, and any financial arrangements before treatment begins.
Should I fill out paperwork before my first orthodontic visit? Yes. Patient forms can be completed online in advance, so when you arrive all you have to do is check in.
