When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

We recommend a first orthodontic check-up at age 7 — or earlier if you notice any signs of concern, such as difficulty chewing, mouth breathing, or jaw shifting.

This doesn’t mean treatment starts right away. The first visit is about checking jaw development, spacing, bite, and crowding — and deciding whether early intervention or simply monitoring is the better approach. How Long Does Treatment Take?

For most patients, braces or Invisalign treatment takes about 18 to 24 months. Simpler cases may finish earlier; more complex ones may take longer.

The timeline depends on the severity of the issue, how consistently you follow care instructions, and which treatment option you choose. Dr. Fung will give you a realistic estimate at your first appointment.

Does It Hurt?

Getting braces or starting Invisalign causes some soreness, especially in the first few days and after adjustments. Most people describe it as a dull pressure — not sharp pain. Over-the-counter pain relief and a few days of soft foods usually handle it well.

What’s the Difference Between Braces and Invisalign?

Both move teeth into better positions, but they work differently.

Braces are fixed brackets bonded to the teeth, connected by a wire. They’re ideal for complex cases or patients who prefer a treatment that doesn’t require daily compliance management. Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners worn 20–22 hours a day — popular with teens and adults who prefer a more discreet option.
