I Lost My Invisalign Aligner — Don't Panic. Here's What to Do

Lost your Invisalign tray and not sure whether to skip ahead, go back, or wait? Here's what to do — and why the answer isn't one-size-fits-all.

Your Invisalign tray is gone. You’ve checked the bathroom counter, the case, the napkin you may have set it in at the restaurant. It’s not there.

Before you decide to skip to the next tray or just go without — stop. Call us first. Here’s why that matters.

Why the Sequence Matters

Invisalign works by moving your teeth through a carefully planned series of aligners, each one shifting things a fraction of a millimeter further than the last. Each tray is worn for about one to two weeks before you move to the next. The trays aren’t interchangeable — they’re designed to work in a specific order, and where you are in the sequence determines what comes next.

Skipping a tray without guidance can push teeth in the wrong direction. Going back to an old tray and wearing it indefinitely can stall progress. Neither is a decision to make on your own.

What to Do Right Now

1. Search carefully before assuming it’s gone. The most common places lost aligners turn up: wrapped in a paper napkin at a meal (please always use your case), on a bathroom counter, or inside a jacket pocket. Give it a thorough look before moving on.

2. Don’t advance to the next tray on your own. The next tray was designed to continue from where the current one left off. If your teeth didn’t complete the current stage, forcing the next tray can create pressure in the wrong places and potentially cause discomfort or shifting.

3. Don’t go back to an old tray indefinitely. Wearing a previous tray can be a short-term holding strategy — but only if Dr. Fung advises it. It shouldn’t be a default fallback.

4. Call our office right away. We’ll ask how long the tray has been missing and where you are in your series. From there, Dr. Fung will make the call — whether that’s wearing the previous tray briefly while a replacement is made, or advancing to the next one if you’re close enough to that point in treatment.

(From our Invisalign page: “What if I lose an aligner? Contact us right away — we’ll let you know whether to move forward or replace it.”)

What We’ll Figure Out Together

The right answer depends on timing. If you noticed quickly — within a day or two — we’ll likely have you wear the previous tray as a placeholder while a replacement is ordered. If you’re near the end of that tray’s two-week window, advancing to the next might make more sense. Dr. Fung will look at your records and make that call.

The key point: this is not a DIY decision. Your Invisalign treatment is a mapped-out plan, and any deviation from it should go through us.

How to Avoid Losing a Tray Again

  • Always use the case. When you take the tray out to eat, it goes straight into the case — not a napkin, not a pocket.
  • Keep your case somewhere visible. On the table at restaurants, on the bathroom counter at home.
  • Never wrap your tray in a napkin. This is how the vast majority of lost trays end up in the trash.
